Touching God
Since the moment in time that humans believed something much bigger than themselves guided the universe and their lives the search began; where is God? He seemed so distant in many of our teachings. Is He a supreme being who exists so far-off from us that only a booming voice from the heavens could allow us to hear from Him? So many people have searched in so many ways to find God or even to define Him. Is He real? Was it all a great hoax?
The search to find God has taken many to faraway lands in hopes that it would be easier to find Him in a different culture or where someone else may have said they found God. The search has been on for eons of time; how do we find God? Can we touch Him?
Looking for God in all kinds of places is like looking for you outside yourself. You search faces and places and still you can't find or identify what you are looking for. This search has seemed to be less than fruitful because the searcher is seeking something outside of themselves that is contained within.
The soul of every human is God's presence within, belonging to God, always. Your consciousness belongs to you but your soul belongs to Him. It cannot be separated from you. You touch the essence of the God within when you seek things that touch your soul. Expressing love to strangers, reaching out when no one else will, building faith within yourself and those around you, uplifting the broken... all of these actions touch our soul.
Beautiful music, caring for nature and animals all help us touch that part of ourselves. We touch God when we tap into a love that is far greater than ourselves and dare to express it by believing in something greater than ourselves. We touch God when we tap into the loving energy that is God and act upon it. Staring at the sunrises and sunsets and absorbing the natural beauty that is before us all are an expression of God that uplifts us and helps us touch the essence of God that exists within us.
Have you ever observed a beloved pet that suddenly sees their own reflection in a mirror? They bark or claw, many attacking the glass, sure that before them is some stranger. Even in the absence of scent or anything that would alert them, they believe what they see. It is the same with humans. It is easier for us to accept that God is 'out there' somewhere, looking at us from a distance than to imagine that we are a reflection of Him. God is within us, not somewhere faraway watching us. We are one and the same with Him, existing through His grace, returning to His consciousness when our journey is over.
How do you know when your search is over? When you find truth there is an end to the search in any quest. You are satisfied and may not know the reason why. It is to the searcher to determine whether there is truth before you, to accept or discard ideas offered for thought.
